Chicago-based PNE Wind USA plans to build a 30-megawatt wind farm over 3,000 acres near Solon, the Press-Citizen reports today.
To generate that level of power might take between 10 to 20 turbines, which the company plans to construct by 2013.
Iowa ranks second nationally in wind power production, but most of its farms are found in the central or western regions of the state. This farm would likely be the first built in Southeast Iowa, the paper reports.
Iowa’s wind industry reaches more than 80 local business and provides 2,300 manufacturing jobs, according to an Environmental Law and Policy Center report. Over 25,000 wind turbines at 80 sites in Iowa generate near 20 percent of the state’s electricity.
