A $25 million USDA loan guarantee was announced today that will aid in the construction of a commercial-scale plant to produce biofuels from Benton and Linn County trash.

The 55,000-square-foot facility will convert organic solid waste and industrial pulps into cellulosic ethanol, and ethanol from corn seed wastes.

“It’s important for us to continue to invest in these technologies for a multitidue of reasons,” Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said. ” It is about national security. We become more reliant on our domestic resources. Number two, it’s a job creator.”

The plant will be built beside an existing ethanol plant in Blairstown, IA, which is owned by the same Maryland-based company – Fiberight.
