A recently released report by US Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack highlights the value of public-private conservation efforts, and the record results achieved by farmers, private landowners, and the USDA since 2009.

Jay Mar, state conservationist for the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Commission stated that “This report demonstrates the commitment of Iowa producers to conserve the natural resources on their farms.”

From 2009 to 2012 Iowa ranked fourth nationally for number of Environmental Quality Incentives Program contracts with famers These agreements protected more than 400,000 acres with practices such as cover crops, nutrient management, terraces, grassed waterways, and rotational grazing systems.

Iowa NRCS provided nearly $92 million in financial assistance to farmers to plan and install these practices.
